COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Former New Jersey governor and federal environmental chief Christine Todd Whitman will discuss the future of nuclear energy in South Carolina and the U.S.
Whitman will speak in Columbia on Thursday. She is president of a consulting firm that specializes in environmental and energy issues and is co-chairman of the Clean and Safe Energy Coalition. She was head of the Environmental Protection Agency from 2001 to 2003.
She is a proponent of nuclear power as a cleaner alternative to coal-fired plants to generate electricity.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission hasn’t issued a license for a nuclear plant in 30 years, but the agency has pending applications for two dozen new reactors. If approved and built, four of those plants would be located in South Carolina.
