FOLLOW UP: Young Woman Dying Of Cancer Gets Her Christmas Wish

An update to a story we brought you several weeks ago. 23-year-old Karen Flores was diagnosed with cancer, a month ago, and it has since spread throughout her body. During that time, her parents have been fighting for a visa to come to the states from Honduras, but were denied twice because they couldn’t tell immigration when they would return. Well, things have changed. And, on Christmas day, Karen got the best gift she could have ever asked for. WJBF News Channel 6’s Barclay Bishop has more.

North Augusta, SC—For 23-year-old Karen Flores, and her parents who live in Honduras, it was a reunion of a lifetime.

Karen’s parents: “Very happy, we cry, we cry, very happy.”

Karen Flores: “Very happy, because finally my wish…you know I have what I wish the most, my parents here.”

These Honduras posters are what Karen used to remind her of her family while battling cancer for the past month. Her parents had been denied visas many times, until Christmas….when the persistence of others got them to the states for what could be their daughter’s final days.

Eric Muhlbaier, Aiken Regional Medical Centers Patient Advocate: “When Karen started asking, you know she was too ill to travel home herself, you know can you help get mom and dad here…what do you do? Except just try to do that.”

Karen: “Since they came, I have been more happy so there has been a change.”

Karen’s parents said they wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for their faith and new friends.

Karen’s Parents: “We’re very thankful, for everybody who has been taking care of her. The doctors and the families of the church, very thankful.”

There’s no telling what the future holds for Karen, but with her parents now by her side, she says those days are looking pretty good.

Karen: “This is what she sees in her future…to get well completely so she can be able to return home.”

The visa is good for 3 months, but the Flores’ say they’ll ask for an extension. The money to get them here and pay for their stay was all made possible through donations in Honduras and Our Lady of Peace church members in North Augusta.
