COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A Democrat vying to replace Gov. Mark Sanford in next year’s race for governor says some of the state’s top constitutional officers can and should force Sanford from office.
Dwight Drake said Thursday Sanford is too busy dealing with his personal problems and is ignoring serious issues like job creation and education.
Drake wants the officials to use a constitutional provision says the attorney general, secretary of state, comptroller general and treasurer can force the governor out if a majority of them say he can’t do his job. If the governor disagrees, the issue goes to the Legislature, which must confirm the decision with a two-thirds vote.
The comptroller general and secretary of state both say they don’t support the move.
