COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Columbia Mayor Bob Coble is going to Washington, hoping that a second federal economic stimulus package might include some money for South Carolina’s capitol city.
The State newspaper reported Monday that Coble hopes to get more than $76 million for road improvements, homeless services and a nursing home.
U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn of South Carolina says he doesn’t think Congress will approve the so-called “Main Street stimulus” package until after President-elect Barack Obama takes office next month.
The U.S. Conference of Mayors on Friday urged Congress to approve nearly $25 billion in projects for cities. Coble’s request for Columbia includes $42 million for street improvements and $20 million for city park improvements.
