CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Charleston City Council has approved Mayor Joe Riley’s choice to head the city’s fire department, as it continues to recover from a blaze last year that killed nine firefighters.
Fifty-four-year-old Thomas Carr is chief of the Montgomery County, Md., Fire and Rescue Service. He plans to retire from that department after a 30-year career and start in Charleston next month.
Riley chose Carr following a national search that resulted in 141 applicants.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Carr’s selection was unanimously confirmed.
Carr is a Charleston native and was not at the meeting. He replaces Acting Fire Chief Ronald Classen, who is retiring. Classen took over from longtime Chief Rusty Thomas, who retired in June, a year after the deadly furniture store fire.
