SULLIVANS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - The swing bridge linking South Carolina’s Sullivans Island to the mainland is stuck open blocking traffic.
The Post and Courier of Charleston and the Sullivans Island town web site report electrical problems left the Ben Sawyer Bridge open Monday.
Repair crews were on the way but it was not known when the bridge would reopen to traffic.
The bridge gained notoriety in 1989 when Hurricane Hugo pulled it from its center support and left it at an angle pointing skyward. The 64-year-old bridge is now undergoing a $35 million rehabilitation.
Residents can still get to Sullivans Island using the Isle of Palms connector from the mainland and then driving across the Breach Inlet bridge from the Isle of Palms onto Sullivans Island.
