Columbia, SC—State budget cuts have hurt state agencies, but they could help you save money if you’re in the market for a computer, furniture or anything else at the state’s Surplus Property warehouse.
“A lot of the agencies are having to cut back because of the economy and as they cut back they’re losing employees and office space and desks and equipment that they would normally be using,“ says Pete McGhee, state warehouse manager. That excess property is ending up at the warehouse, which is having a sale right now until the end of June. To reduce the amount employees will have to inventory in July, they’ve cut prices by 50 to 90 percent.
That means you can buy a Dell desktop computer, with flat panel monitor, for $75. There’s a 32-inch Sony television with stand for $200. There are bookcases and file cabinets for $10 each. There are even pianos for $75.
James Hamilton bought a large desk for his home office for $40. “Oh elsewhere, oh man, you’re gonna pay in the hundreds. You’re gonna pay in the hundreds, easy,“ he says. “I was here last week and bought a video projector for a hundred bucks. So you can’t beat it. It’s great.“
The money from the items goes back to the state agencies, which helps them. But it also helps the people who can buy things they need and save a lot of money.
“We’re just trying to get some of the property back out in use to the citizens of South Carolina, and giving them a good deal in this economic bad times we’re going through,“ McGhee says.
The surplus property warehouse is on Boston Avenue in West Columbia. It’s open Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The sale will last until the end of June.
