SUMTER, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina mother is facing charges after her 14-year-old daughter crashed a car, killing a small child in the back seat.
The Item of Sumter reports Friday that 30-year-old Nicole Ford has been charged with seven counts of unlawful conduct toward a child for letting the teen drive.
Investigators say the teen lost control of the car while trying to make a turn Tuesday night. Six other children were in the car, and no one was wearing a seatbelt.
One-year-old Kelly Marie Ford died at a Columbia hospital Thursday. Other passengers were treated and released.
Drivers in South Carolina must be at least 15 to get a beginner’s permit.
The Sumter Police Department is investigating. Police say more charges against Ford are possible.
