It is the test many of us dreaded during our high school years: the SAT. This year, the numbers for Georgia and South Carolina students are not something educators are excited about. But, there are some things in the works in Aiken County schools to give those numbers a boost. WJBF News Channel 6’s Joy Howe has more.

Aiken County, SC—No “easy day” for these seniors…this class is a college-prep statistics course, aimed at getting students ready for the SAT’s.
The latest scores from Silver Bluff High School show slight improvement, but Principal Todd Bornscheuer would like to see numbers really climb.
Todd Bornscheuer, Principal, Silver Bluff High School: “We’re far from where I’d like to see us be. As I mentioned, we have 60% of our student population taking the SAT, Approximately 1/3 of those who took it scored below a 400 on each of the 3 subsets. That requires 1/3 doing at least a 600 in order to just get it at a good balance there.”
So here at Silver Bluff High School, it’s all about a plan: they’re pushing students to look at careers as early as 9th grade. They’re adding more sat prep courses, and they encourage seniors to get rid of the idea of an “easy last year.“
Dr. Randy Stowe, Assistant Aiken County Schools Superintendent: “There is a problem. There’s an old tradition for seniors to have an easy year, and it’s not just in Aiken County or in south Carolina, it’s a nationwide problem and it’s really important that the students who are going to college take a subsitive course-load their senior year.“
Principal Bornscheuer: “The days of early release, without taking a math or an English class, with the plan to go to college next year…that’s a disastrous combination.”
As for why scores continue to fall, school leaders say there’s a reason:
Dr. Stowe: “One reason our SAT scores are going down, is because more and more of our students are taking the SAT and what we’re seeing is some students who are really not prepared for college are taking the SAT just to see where they stand, and that’s a useful reality check for them and so we don’t want to discourage that, but that does lower our scores.“
Principal Bornscheuer says Silver Bluff has the co-curriculars down flat: award-winning athletic programs, band and clubs.
Now, it’s time to add new programs, and make well-rounded students turn out well-rounded SAT scores.
Dr. Stowe says the SAT test is not a fair comparison of high schools in Aiken County, or any county, because the number of students who take it is not consistent from school-to-school.
