Despite economy woes, it was a busy Black Friday for lots of retailers in the CSRA. Lines started forming in the early hours of the morning, as shoppers stood waiting for advertised deals. So who gets up….or never even goes to bed? Joy Howe takes a look at what it takes to be a ‘Black Friday Shopper.‘

Aiken, SC—They get here early…
“I got here about 5 minutes ‘til 4.“
….and get in line.
“I feel great about my place in line, since I just left Wal-mart. I was in and out of there in 7 minutes.“
Armed with treasure maps….the Black Friday shopper comes prepared:
“All day yesterday. We get all the sales papers and we write down what we want and we go.“
“I am going for the Barbie vanity interactive something, something.“
It’s a special group of people who get up in the early, dark hours of morning:
“It’s my friend’s jacket actually; he’s just sleeping in the car.“
“Yeah, it’s a different kind of people, you know. But you’re out to get a good deal!“
The doors open at 6 a.m., and the line is sucked inside like a spaghetti noodle…people winding in…and wound up:
“Running, just mass…just run as fast as you can.“
“We didn’t grab the buggy ‘til we got to the back. Buggy slows you down!“
“I ran back there to make sure I could get it first”
“We got 2, 2 of almost everything we wanted and then some!“
Lines outside, shift inside…
Yes, there’s something to be said about the Black Friday Shopper who gets up early to get the deals…or even just get into the thrill of it all.
“Worth it, worth it!”
For some, finding the treasure here is the end of the long line.
“Ready to go home and let my feet thaw out!“
But for others, this won’t be the last stop.
“No, we do go for breakfast in a little while. That’s the only reason I’m here. Yeah, I feed him, it’s bribery.“
Bribery’s a small price to pay….for getting up in the dark to save big bucks on Back Friday.
Managers at the Target in Aiken say they had just as many people in line this year as last year….and they say they sold out of electronic gadgets like GPS navigation units and flat screen TV’s in minutes.
