6 Killed On SC Roads During Thanksgiving Weekend
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of six people being killed on South Carolina highways during the 106-hour Thanksgiving holiday. The time frame ran from Wednesday, November 25, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, November 29, at midnight. In 2008, there were 14 fatalities on state roads and highways during the Thanksgiving holiday period.
Columbia, SC—The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of six people being killed on South Carolina highways during the 106-hour Thanksgiving holiday. The time frame ran from Wednesday, November 25, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, November 29, at midnight. In 2008, there were 14 fatalities on state roads and highways during the Thanksgiving holiday period.
As of November 29, 815 people had died on South Carolina highways, compared to 835 highway deaths last year at this time. Of the 618 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2009, 367 were not wearing seat belts.
Through midnight November 29, 85 motorcyclists, 81 pedestrians and 11 bicyclists have died in collisions on South Carolina roads and highways. The remaining fatalities are the result of collisions involving an assortment of vehicles which are not subject to state motor vehicle licensing laws. This may include such vehicles as farm tractors, lawn mowers, mopeds or ATVs.
