Augusta, GA—Louise Biggs has been patrolling the streets in Augusta for 10 years now…But she doesn’t have a badge or blue lights. She has a smile and a way with people.
Louise Biggs, Sunshine Taxi: “It’s easy to strike up conversation and it’s very entertaining sometimes. And you learn a lot, you learn a lot from each other.“
In fact, her customers were the ones who nicknamed her ‘Sunshine’ just like her one-car taxi service.
Wednesday night, she’ll be busier than ever, as New Year’s Eve is rung in by thousands who flock to parties all over the CSRA.
Biggs: “We get real busy, and I’m proud of the people, I tell them when they get inside, ‘I’m so proud of you for getting a taxi, because you are saving yourself a lot of money and you’re saving yourself and people’s lives.“
Louise says better to be picked up by her….than by law enforcement.
L/Cpl Trevor Clinton, SC Highway Patrol: “If you happen to run into us and we lock you up, it’s an offense that you can get over, but living with the fact that you’ve hurt someone or killed someone is a great deal.“
Highway Patrol will be out New Year’s Eve, patrolling highways and back roads, setting up checkpoints, watching for drunk drivers.
Clinton: “It’s what you can do, is plan ahead. We want the message out to plan ahead.“
Local bars like the Country Club are pushing that very message…they have cab numbers posted inside, and come New Year’s, will have them lined up outside.
Biggs: “One taxi can’t get everybody!“
....So count on Sunshine to get you someone else, if she’s tied up:
Biggs: “Because if I cannot get them, if something came up, then I would have one of my fellow cab drivers to go and get them. People like having dependability, they like knowing, when they call Sunshine, they’re going to get their taxi.“
Who knows? Come Wednesday….riding in this cab with ‘Sunshine’, might just be the bright spot in your New Year’s Eve night.
