Hundreds of Augusta water customers have received flyers offering free tests of their water, but the city says it’s not their deal and the drinking water is fine. So, who’s behind the move to check the H2O? WJBF News Channel 6’s George Eskola has the story.
Augusta, GA—John Fogerty is an Augusta water customer, and he got a flyer at his house.
“It was a clear envelope with a yellow piece of paper folded in half and an empty vile in it when I opened up the yellow paper it said about checking the sample of the water that we had,” he said.
Hundreds of flyers were found hanging on mail boxes all over Augusta they are offering free water tests complete with a small tube to place the water sample.
One of the neighborhoods is National Hills.
The Augusta’s Utilities Department provides the water to this neighborhood but it’s not the Utilities department making the offer to test the water.
The flyer is from a private company called Environmental Water Systems.
“I don’t really understand why they want to do that yes and they’re making an effort by putting it on everybody’s mail box,” said Fogerty.
The flyers have Utilities Department officials bristling a bit.
“Augusta’s water is safe,” says Water Quality Superintendent Brantley Kuglar.
He says the flyers for the water tests are a sales pitch to try and convince water customers to buy a water filtration system, but he says the official looking flyers can create alarm for some customers.
“A lot of old people are scared to death and they go for this and they have these filters installed in their homes when they really don’t need it our water is as safe as any water in the United States,“ says Kuglar.
“They’re probably drumming up business, but they’re not getting John Fogerty’s,” said the satisfied city water customer.
