Richmond County S.P.L.O.S.T. Referendum Results
In Richmond County, the results are in…many cast their ballots Tuesday on the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or S.P.L.O.S.T. There was a really low turnout…but a big price tag for area projects…$184 million worth of sales tax money at stake. WJBF News channel 6’s Barclay Bishop has more.
Augusta, GA—Many in Richmond County have been pretty vocal on whether or not they want to see the salestax pass. Well, the polls have closed, and i can tell you that yes, if you live in Richmond County, you will be paying that extra penny at the counter.
After heading to the polls, many in Augusta headed downtown to Cafe 209’s music lounge, anxiously awaiting those S.P.L.O.S.T. results.
One supporter voter ‘yes’...mostly because he wants to see the Miller Theater restored. Now, $6 million of that penny sales tax will help do just that.
More projects are on the list….the damming of Rocky Creek at Regency Mall, creating a 13-acre lake.
While these folks are happy, judging by voter turnout…not many seem to mind the outcome, either way. Only about 9 percent of Augusta-Richmond County’s registered voters headed out to cast their ballots.
Officials say the turnout could have been better…but they say they’re happy voters approved it, and are looking forward to what this simple penny can do for the Garden City’s future.
Here they are the latest numbers from Tuesday’s vote:
Everything but the provisional ballots has been counted. With 74 of 75 precincts reporting, the ‘yes’ votes far outdid the ‘no’ voted…6772 - 2891, or 70 percent ‘yes’, and 30 percent ‘no’.
