The pants get pulled up, or you get kicked out. Tuesday night, a new policy was discussed at the Richmond County Board of Education Committee meeting. It would essentially ban students from wearing inappropriate attire to school events. The problem is, how do you enforce it? WJBF News Channel 6’s Barclay Bishop has more.

Augusta, GA—Barbara Pulliam, Richmond County Board of Education member, District 4: “Everybody knows it’s indecent exposure, if you’re pants, if you’re showing your underwear in public.“
But, for Richmond County schools, it’s only enforced during class hours. Tuesday evening, Vice President of the Board of Education, Alex Howard, proposed they start including school events in that policy.
Pete Fletcher, Richmond County Board of Education attorney: “The issue is, how do you, how do you want to go about enforcing it? The legality, we can draft that up, we can post a sign.“
Ideas of public safety officers enforcing the policy came up, along with school administrators who are at the events.
Pulliam: “I’ve seen it over there at Glenn Hills. All those kids had their shirts out and pants dropped down, and I went over there, everybody’s pants up. So, when they know that you mean what they say, and there will be consequences, they do what they’re supposed to do.“
Board member, Jimmy Atkins, says take it one step further, including those wtih the color guard and dance drill teams.
Jimmy Atkins, Richmond County Board of Education member, District 8: “Sometimes, I’m at some of these events and I’m a little embarassed by what some of these young ladies have on. And, they’re representing that school and this school district.“
While there are some kinks that still need to be worked out, most of the members seem to agree that something needs to be done….sooner, rather than later.
Pulliam: “Public restaurants have signs that say you can’t come in here without shoes and a shirt on. I mean, that’s their policy. So, I think we can easily do it, you can’t show your underwear.“
No final decision was made on what the details of the policy would be. However, it will be brought up at the next board meeting, Tuesday, October 20th.

“Back in the day” Ms. Pulliam’s unnatural hair color would have been grounds for a student wearing it being instructed to go home until his/her hair was returned to a natural hair color. There was some leniency for pep rallies, but that was it. Other days that color wouldn’t have been allowed. Although I agree with her, I think she would have more credibility with a lot of parents if she had a more professional appearance herself while complaining about the students’ inappropriate appearance.
