Rally To Support Former Augusta State Senator

It’s been four years since former State Senator Charles Walker, from Augusta, was sentenced to ten years in Federal Prison on conspiracy, mail fraud, and tax charges. But, his supporters are taking to the streets to urge an investigation into what they call a political prosecution. WJBF News Channel 6’s George Eskola has the story.

Augusta, GA—Making the case for Charles Walker…It’s been four year since the former State Senate Majority Leader was convicted on 127 counts in Federal Court in Augusta and sentenced to ten years in prison.

His supporters have maintained it was politics, and not criminal actions, that brought him down. Wednesday afternoon, at 4:30 p.m., there will be a rally of support for Walker outside his former business office on Laney-Walker Boulevard.

Walker’s son, Champ, said the rally is to urge the community to call on the Justice Department and the U.S. Congress to step up an investigation into the case, because he says it’s clear Walker was brought to trial by his political enemies.

“We want people to call the Department of Justice to talk to Eric Holder to encourage them to continue the investigation for political prosecution in this case it is very clear it’s not legalistic a commoner can understand it without a doubt today we’re asking everybody to call to voice their opinion it is an outrage what happened,” Champ Walker, the son of the former State Senator.

Walker won a battle, late last month, when trial Judge Dudley Bowen recused himself from hearing the appeal. Bowen’s appointment to the federal Bench was strongly opposed by Charles Walker.

Champ Walker says it clear there was the opportunity for bias by Judge Bowen based on Walker’s activism at the time.
