Man On A Mission…Raising Eyebrows On The Streets

Did you see him? A man, with a cross, covered in what appeared to be blood, made his way across the Augusta area Tuesday. Our phones were ringing off the hook, wondering who this man was…and what was his message? WJBF News Channel 6’s Barclay Bishop went looking for answers.

Augusta, GA—George Broadwater, evangelist: “The cross itself is around 39 pounds. Last year, around April, I walked from Augusta to Florida in 17 days.”

But Tuesday, George Broadwater hit the streets of Augusta. No shame to his name….he says he’s simply on a mission from the Lord.

Broadwater: “He says, go out to the highways and byways and the cross is self explanatory.”

Barclay Bishop, reporting: “When he said go to the highways and byways, do you think he literally meant carrying this cross along these busy roads?”

Broadwater: “Absolutely.”

Hitting these busy roads certainly got people talking.  All day, WJBF’s Facebook page was flooded with comments…but most people were just tracking him. So, we decided to so, as well, catching up with him on Davis Road.

Bishop: “What time did you start today?”

Broadwater: “Today it had to have been around 1:30 p.m., from the Best Buy parking lot, to Wheeler Road, all the way around, to Columbia Road…from Columbia Road to Bobby Jones, from Bobby Jones, back to here to now, going back to my destiny to call it a day.”

Folks we talked to, whether they agreed with his reasoning or not, say it’s bold, and commended Broadwater.

Shopper: “I seen him out there on Washington Road.”

Bishop: “Do you think it’s a little weird?”

Shopper: “Well not really, there’s a reason behind it.”

Shortly after we arrived, Broadwater packed up and headed home…looking for his next place to walk, hoping others will follow.

Broadwater: “I’m on a mission, I never stop. I’m just a happy soldier, born again, trusting Christ and faith, that’s it.”

Broadwater says he’s been taking these long walks with the cross for a little more than a year now. The farthest he’s ever walked was from Augusta to Jacksonville, Florida.
