A family in Harlem grew by nearly half a dozen this weekend, adding 5 international children to their brood. They’ve been getting to know each other for nearly three years. Now, they are all together, 5 kids under 15, at home in Harlem. It’s been a long costly process…about $100,000 in adoption costs, but the family says God has provided, and it’s worth every penny. WJBF-TV News Channel 6’s Paige Tucker saw them in action, on Tuesday.
Harlem, GA—Meet Marlin, Silda, Sindy, Mimi, and Byron Dean…the newest additions to renee and Scott Dean’s family.
Scott Dean, Harlem, GA: “Being 4 to 3, now, on the boy to girl ratio with kids, we had to go from man-to-man defense, to a zone.“
The brothers and sisters from Guatemala joined the Dean’s two sons, at school, Tuesday in Columbia County, after living most of their lives in a Guatemalan orphanage.
Scott Dean: “Elevators, escalators. They’d never seen an airplane and they had to get on one. They got up in the air and said, ‘okay, how do we get down?‘“
Since 2005, the Deans have made frequent trips to Central America to spend time with the children they were working to adopt. Scott says the importance of that bonding is evident, now.
Scott Dean: “Ours are comfortable enough with us that they can tell us what’s wrong. They can rely on us to fix problems, and they know we’re not going to leave them. They’re ours. We’re theirs, and we’re going to be together.“
The five kids, who, Tuesday, were working on their English with a family friend, are lucky to have each other. The Deans didn’t consider separating the siblings.
Renee Dean: “I never questioned whether we could afford it, or whether there would be enough love to go around, or enough room in the house, those things I knew God would provide.“
Renee and Scott call this a journey of faith, one they say they weren’t prepared to do on their own.
Renee Scott: “God has his own timing in a lot of these things, and it’s not for us to understand. It’s just for us to pray our way through, and take it as it comes.“
Scott Dean: “Everybody’s home, we’re all together. We’ll have bumps, and we’ll have fights, and we’ll have arguments, but we’re all under one roof and we can deal with each other now, and we’re not split.“
The kids are testing now in Columbia County schools and will most likely start Grovetown Middle and North Harlem, next week. The little guy will go to preschool in Harlem.
The date kept changing to finalize the adoption process, and bring the kids home…their arrival coincides with the opening of their new business.
