Georgia DOT Suspends Roadwork For Sales Tax Holiday

Shoppers will get a break from road construction this weekend to go along with the state’s suspension of the sales tax for school supplies, clothing and computer equipment. The Georgia Department of Transportation will suspend construction-related lane closures within five miles of a shopping mall or major shopping district on all interstates and major state routes beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, July 31 through 9 p.m. Sunday, August 2.

Atlanta, GA—Shoppers will get a break from road construction this weekend to go along with the state’s suspension of the sales tax for school supplies, clothing and computer equipment.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GADOT) will suspend construction-related lane closures within five miles of a shopping mall or major shopping district on all interstates and major state routes beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, July 31 through 9 p.m. Sunday, August 2.

“The sales tax holiday is an opportunity for Georgians to save a little money during these very challenging economic times,” said Georgia DOT Commissioner Vance C. Smith, Jr. “The Department is glad to offer some relief from lane closures as families prepare for school.”

During the annual “back to school” sales tax holiday, Georgia shoppers will have the opportunity to purchase certain clothing items, computers and computer accessories tax-free. The “back to school” sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m., Friday, July 31 and continues until midnight Sunday, August 2.

Motorists may visit Georgia-Navigator.com for current road conditions, or call 511 on any phone for free, real-time traffic information. Traveler information is also available at 511GA.org and a toll-free number for callers from outside the state, 1-877-MYGA511 (1-877-694-2511).

Georgia 511 provides statewide traffic conditions, route-specific information and estimated travel times within metro Atlanta. Additionally, 511 callers can access transit providers, major airports, rideshare organizations, Georgia tourism information and 511 systems in neighboring states.
