TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (AP) - Tybee Island officials say they found an unwelcome visitor on Georgia’s largest public beach - a 9-foot, 300-pound alligator.

The gator roaming Tybee’s northern beach was caught before it hurt anyone. Jack Douglas, who traps alligators and other wild critters for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, said Thursday it was the largest gator he’s seen on Tybee Island in eight years.

Douglas said the alligator, which he caught Monday, posed a threat to people on the beach because it didn’t seem afraid of people.

Alligators are a rare sight on Tybee Island. Douglas says he’s been called to trap just five alligators on Tybee in the last 20 years.
