ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia’s tax collections dropped about 16 percent in August over the same month last year, but Gov. Sonny Perdue’s office says exceptional circumstances were largely to blame and there are no plans yet for further budget cuts.
Perdue’s office said Friday that a big part of the drop stemmed from Department of Revenue cuts that caused about 270,000 income tax refund checks to go out after the start of the current fiscal year on July 1.
For that reason, the drop in net revenue for July and August this year was considerably higher than last year.
Revenues for August declined by 16.4 percent from the previous year, to $1.05 billion compared with $1.26 billion in August of 2008. For July, they dropped 9.6 percent.
