An Evans fire destroys a family’s home and everything in it. It happened around 5:00 p.m., Monday evening, in the High Grove subdivision. Thankfully no one was home. Fire investigators aren’t real sure how it got started, but once it did, a neighbor from across the street got the whole thing on tape. WJBF News Channel 6’s Barclay Bishop has that story.

Evans, GA—Guillaume Morin, caught fire on camera: “Right now, they’re going to climb up there and bust out that window.”
For neighbors, it was like a scene out of a movie.
Jim Consiglio, neighbor: “There was a large loud boom and there were flames, and my neighbor…and my neighbor seen it and I think he called 911.”
Once crews showed up, Guillaume Morin, who lives across the street, ran inside to get his camera.
Morin: “I saw it and then I decided that my wife would probably want to see it…she was at work. And, you know I’d have a story to tell so I grabbed my camera, walked out here and started filming it.”
You can see the flames shooting through the attic, but investigators say it started in the garage, spreading quickly even with 15 firefighters trying to put it out.
Battalion Chief Danny Kuhlmann, Martinez Fire Rescue: “When it gets in the attic, it really walks very, very fast, through the attic because it’s all exposed dry wood.”
Morin: “At first it wasn’t bad, but towards the end when the whole top of the roof started catching on fire, I mean I could feel the heat, I mean it raised the temperature up big time.”
While the family wasn’t home at the time, their family dog was, but thankfully crews were able to get him out safely. As for the house, it’s a total loss…
Consiglio: “Just happy that everybody was okay, that’s the number one thing. You know these items…you can always replace.”
Morin: “I’m glad that the family is okay. I mean, I feel for them, they’re going to have a tough time right now, and I’m glad no other houses burned down.”
Fire investigators tell us arson has been ruled out and one firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion, but will make a full recovery.
