The father of a Richmond County student is speaking out after video was released of a Richmond County Board of Education officer grabbing his son’s neck. He sits down only with WJBF News Channel 6’s Barclay Bishop to talk about what he thinks should happen to that officer.
Augusta, GA—Earl, student’s father: “If it was you and I we would have been arrested, immediately, I mean there is no excuse for what he did.“
Just 2 weeks ago, Earl’s 14-year-old son was seen on video released to the media last week, being verbally and physically assaulted while leaving a varsity football game. The man accused was this Richmond County Board of Education Officer, James Holmon.
Earl: “This is not just some incident that happened because he was stressed out. This guy’s got an attitude problem.“
Each officer wears a camera on their uniform, the video released was from Holmon’s.
Earl: “It’s either he didn’t care or he forgot that he was wearing this device.“
Following an investigation, Holmon was fired, but Earl says more should have been.
Earl: “If it was you or I that would have done these things that took place that night, that Friday night, there wouldn’t have been no investigation. Well, there should have been an investigation, while you and I were incarcerated, waiting your bail.“
Earl says this incident isn’t just an eye-opener for him, but should be for other parents, as well.
Earl: “The amount of people that were there that night present, what would he have done if there was just maybe 2 or 3 of them? They are there to protect our kids at school, and at school functions, but who’s going to protect our kids from them? They need us and they need us to be a voice for them when they can’t speak.“
Earl says he believes there are many stand up officer who work for the county. He says his son hasn’t received any apologies from Holmon. However, he tells us, Dr. Dana Bedden did call Earl personally to apologize. Holmon is appealing his termination.
