Augusta, GA—The family of Richmond County School Board member Joe Scott, who died Saturday, has finalized his funeral arrangements. Mr. Scott’s funeral will be at Tabernacle Baptist Church on Laney Walker Boulevard at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday morning.

As for filling Mr. Scott’s seat on the Richmond County School Board, they must wait fifty days before a special election can be held, with September 15th being the first available date. School Board Attorney Pete Fletcher says that may not be enough time, and the election will most likely be held November 3rd.

If the race can be added to the November ballot, it would give leaders more time and save taxpayers some money. Even with a budget shortfall needing immediate attention, Mr. Scott’s seat will be unfilled until voters weigh in. “Of course Joe had a lot of experience. We will miss his input. It’s just losing one more member as far as trying to work out everything. We’ll just have to persevere and do the best we can among the nine of us,“ says Helen Minchew, Richmond County School Board member.

Minchew and others on the board say whoever replaces Joe Scott will have big shoes to fill as he was a tireless fighter for his district and the entire education community.
