For Augusta commission District 1, a runoff will be scheduled between Matt Aitken and William Fennoy. They were the top vote getters Tuesday night. For District 3, Joe Bowles is the winner. In District 5, William Lockett edges out former commissioner Bobby Hankerson. And in District 9, it’s a solid win for J.R. Hatney with just over 98 percent of the vote. On the school board side, Patsy Scott will take over for her late husband, longtime educator and board member Joe Scott. Steve Smith wins re-election as Marshal.
Augusta, GA—It’s election day in the CSRA. We have a recap of the day’s turnout, and the expectations once the ballots are tallied.
In Augusta Commission District 3, Commissioner Joe Bowles is seeing two challengers, but District 1 has the biggest slate, with four candidates seeking the seat.
Julian Smith Casino is in District 1 and where it almost appears there’s more candidates on the ballot than voters punching ballots.
Turnout has been slight. The record poor turnout for a Commission election was 10 years ago, when 16 percent came out to the polls, the Augusta Elections Office is predicting a 10 to 12 percent turnout.
We asked voters why they feel there is so much apathy even though there’s a lot at stake in this election.
And, even with this low turnout, some Augusta voters may have to draw on their strengths to do this again. We face possible runoffs in District one, in District 3, and the 5th District Richmond County Board of Education race. If any of the candidates fail to get 50 percent of the vote, that runoff will be in four weeks.
