(Harlem, Georgia) - The deadline to apply for Harlem’s Director of Public Safety is Friday. The city received nearly 20 applications for the position.

The position was left vacant when Harlem Public Safety Chief Jerry Baldwin resigned. Police reports say Baldwin was seen by a Wal-Mart employee hiding several items and not paying for everything when he checked out. Wal-mart did not prosecute.

City Administrator Jean Dove says the town needs someone with experience in fire and police protection.

Dove: “We’ll go through the applications and narrow them down probably to the top five and we’ll set up interviews, background checks, and references and then narrow them down to the top three candidates.

The Director of Public Safety is expected to be hired by mid-March.
