It was another day at a bankruptcy hearing for the owner of Dent’s Funeral Home. The business closed, earlier this year, after tax problems. WJBF News Channel 6’s Fraendy Clervaud has more.
Augusta, GA—-Frank Griffin, part owner, Dent’s Funeral Home: “The people know, I don’t have their money, so my name should be cleared in the Augusta area, and the air.“
Frank Griffin, part owner of Dent’s Funeral Home, speaks out after the business shut its doors in February, because of significant tax problems. The Georgia Department of Revenue says the funeral home owes money. But Griffin says he does not have it.
Frank Griffin: “If I had spent all the money that they claim I spent, I would be in the Cayman Islands, or somewhere, living it up.”
Cashus Holmes and many others in the hearing wanted to know what happened to the money from pre-paid funerals. She says her father paid about $10,000 for a funeral. The law states that those monies are supposed to be placed in a trust fund but Griffin says the owners asked for that money.
Frank Griffin: “I was asked how much can we get out of those checks. I brought that money back the rest of it, and the rest of the money…we paid bills with it.”
Crriminal charges could be pending against the funeral home, but Griffin says he’s not worried about it.
Frank Griffin: “Because it says the funeral director that is in continuous charge of a funeral home is the overseer of what goes on so I’m not worried about criminal charges.”
Griffin says he’s sorry about what happened, but says for those who paid for a funeral help may be on the way.
Frank Griffin: “I will see to them being buried. I have friends. They said I don’t have friends but I have friends in high place, so they will get buried.”
