(Augusta) - By the end of April, navigating the crooks and curves on Interstate 20 in Richmond County should be a lot easier. Ramps and flyover bridges will be open for drivers.

Georgia Department of Transportation Area II Engineer, Mike Adams: “The roads we’ll start widening back out where we’ve got concrete barriers, right now; reduced lanes. We’re hoping by Memorial Day to be able to open up some of that.”

Adams says 80 percent of the project is finished and a July 2010 completion date has been moved up, considerably.

Adams: “But we’re actually shooting for hoping to be done sometime in October.”

Workers have an incentive to work faster. They get extra cash to complete the work early.

Downtown, the Saint Sebastian Way project is on schedule. A lot of the bridge work is done and beams have been set for the bridges.

Adams: “We’ve got the pavement in from John C. Calhoun to Reynolds Street and crossing all those streets down there. The next big thing people will see downtown is probably sometime in late summer we’ll actually have to close down 15th street, rebuild that bridge but other than that most of the work will stay off system.”

Until the work is done, drivers are urged to slow down and watch for ramp changes.
