UNDATED—A loud noise was heard shortly before 3 a.m. Friday morning in Aiken, Richmond and Columbia counties.

Local law enforcement agencies also report hearing the boom, but no one knows what caused it.

Chris Turner, and Aiken County resident, told WJBF News Channel 6’s Sheena Bodie what he saw and heard, in a phone interview. We have also been informed that two Aiken County Sheriff’s Office deputies reportedly saw a fireball in the sky.

According to the Director of the DuPont Planetarium at USC-Aiken, Gary Senn, the cause of the boom could have possibly been a meteor. Stay tuned to WJBF Newschannel 6 and WJBF.com for more on this developing story.

I was waken up by a huge blast sound at 2:53 a.m. It sounded like thunder or an explosion. I looked out the window to see if it was raining. It wasn’t everything was calm. It really scared me. I live about 3 blocks from the firestation, I thought I would soon hear the fire trucks and police cars but I didn’t.

I happened to be awake late (this morning) and got a glass of orange juice to drink. It was around 2:35 when I heard a tremendous noise that shook my house. It seemed to come from an easterly direction. I quickly checked radar for storms in the area but there were none. I looked outside but saw nothing. I then decided it must have been a sonic boom. Did not hear about the fireball until this AM. It must have been a sonic boom generated by a meteor. I live in the North Augusta area.

I LIVE IN THE HILL AREA OF AUGUSTA AND ALSO HEARD AND FELT THE BOOM/EXPLOSION. I ALSO THOUGHT IT WAS THUNDER BUT FELT LIKE IT WASN’T THE NORMAL THUNDER SOUND. IF SOMETHING CRASHED, THERE SHOULD BE DEBRIS. KEEP US POSTED.

I heard a HUGE bang around 3:00 this morning and thought it was LOUD thunder! I looked out my window to see if it was raining and the sky was clear. It scared me, what was that bang?

I went to bed around 2:30am and heard a noise that I thought was thunder. In just a minute I heard a noise that sounded like an explosion. It shook the house it was so loud. Can’t wait to find out what it was. I live between Grovetown and Harlem.

Since there are all sorts of things floating around up there now, everything from comet shards to general space junk, it is not unusual for parts to come into our atmosphere, break the sound barrier and burn up. Yes, it can be unsettling, but it’s not life-threatening just yet.

Power was lost over downtown Augusta
(at least) at around 3am this morning.
It was restored by 4am.  Of course,
this could be a coincidence with the
timing of the boom.  However, if it was
not coincidence, Georgia Power
(no doubt)knows what went wrong with
their system and might be in a position
to shed light on this subject.

Since the collision of Russian and
American satellites on Feb. 10, 2009,
there have been a number of similar
(unexplained) incidents reported
(booms, meteor-like objects, etc.).
More pieces are expected to reenter
our atmosphere soon.

Hmmm, I wonder if the boom could have been associated with the very strong winds I noticed around 3:45 AM on Little River near Rousseau Creek.

WOW….I’m glad to someone else heard this noise!  It woke me up, I waited around thinking I would hear firetruck’s go out since I live close to headquarters in Martinez….Never heard anything after that loud noise.  I woke up this morning and came straight to the computer to see what it might have been.  I really thought it was an earthquake…!  It shook my house and rattle things on the wall it was so hard…Hope someone is able to find out what it was…...Have a good day :)
