Columbia County, GA—According to Columbia County EMA Director Pam Tucker, a bear report was received Thursday morning from a Columbia county resident saying two bear cubs were seen on the playground at Blue Ridge Commons, around 2:00 a.m.

The apartment manager advises that when she was notified, she inspected the area and saw small bear tracks on the playground. She took photos of the tracks which be sent to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and she stated that she would notify the apartment residents so they are aware.

This is the first bear sighting reported since June 19th, when “Columbo”, as Tucker calls the bear (We named the bear Jess Passenthru) made his trek through Columbia County. He was last seen traveling west in the vicinity of Old Washington Road and Clanton Road.

Please be reminded of the information DNR provided for handling bears in residential areas:

  • Never pursue or chase on foot or in vehicles in an attempt to chase it from the area
  • Give plenty of space and an avenue of retreat
  • Homeowners should remove dogs from the area (keep penned up) so the bear doesn’t run up a tree
  • Remove all dog and cat food from outside on porches or yards
  • Put trash out on the day of pick-up by garbage company
