Augusta, GA—City Administrator Fred Russell says it’s a $6 million hole that needs to be filled.
Russell presented city leaders with his recommendations for the 2010 budget.
If your property is worth $100,000, it would cost you an extra $46 per year. He says the property tax hike, a 16 percent increase over this year’s, would fill a hole in the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office budget.
Law enforcement is normally a priority for taxpayers, but the Sheriff understands tax hikes in tough times are tough sells.
Sheriff Ronnie Strength, Augusta, GA: “Nobody likes tax increases. I don’t know what decision our Commission will take, but we have to pay for services, and I think that’s what they’ll be doing over the next few weeks, looking to see how they can handle it without a tax increase.“
Russell’s tax hike recommendation was just one of the Adminstrator’s proposals to balance the budget. Others include increasing bus fares and cutting routes, and closing the Augusta Municipal Golf Course to off set a $300,000 loss.
