Augusta, GA—Leaders of some Augusta groups are getting sick over proposed budget cuts.
Arts and culture groups are going before city Commissioners, this week, making the case why they should not have their budgets slashed.
City Administrator Fred Russell is proposing a 15 percent across-the-board cut for all outside agencies.
The proposed cuts could cost the Richmond County Health Department more than $180,000, resulting in job cuts, furloughs, and a reduction in health care for Augusta’s most needy.
Dr. Ketty Gonzalez, Richmond County Health Department: “We’ll have to cut the number of nurses. That means, naturally, we’ll not be able to see the same number of people. So right now, we’re seeing about 4,800 a month…it could drop to 4,300.“
The 15 percent cut for agencies, like the city museums, the Arts Council, and the land trust, would add up to more than $1 million in savings for Augusta taxpayers.
