Augusta, GA—-Imagine trying to get money out of your account but by the time you get to the ATM this is what you see. Richmond County investigators say early Wednesday morning thieves got away with Georgia Bank and Trust’s ATM by using a forklift. Authorities say the thieves took the forklift from a construction site at First Baptist Church.
Trent Evans, Augusta: “The ignition switch was cut out, on the ground the plate was taken off bolts certain things wires and stuff that they cut.”
The church is located right next to the bank. Construction workers say this has never happened to them before.
Trent Evans: “Everyday whenever we leave we lock everything down put locks. Everything is bolted down everything is fastened in order to keep robbery theft anything from happening.”
Bank officials would not comment on camera but they tell us that the stolen ATM did have a security camera inside of it. Authorities are in the process of reviewing the last image that was taken through their internal system. Officials would not say how much money was in the ATM. And although the machine is gone, the bank says it will be tough for the criminals to get the money because the money is in a separate vault inside the ATM. Bank officials say they have insurance and customers will not have to worry about higher costs associated with this theft.
