ATLANTA (AP) - The Metropolitan Atlanta Regional Transit Authority, or MARTA, is getting more than $600,000 as part of the federal economic stimulus package to beef up security on public transportation.
It’s part of a $78 million allocation announced in New York City on Wednesday by Department of Homeland Secretary Janet Napolitano. The money is aimed at hiring 240 law enforcement officers at 15 transit systems across the country to guard against terrorism.
The largest grant went to New York City, with $35.9 million. Chicago got $4.9 million, and Washington, D.C., received $9.6 million.
MARTA officials did not immediately return a call seeking comment Wednesday.
