ATLANTA (AP) - Federal authorities have cited and fined three metro Atlanta construction companies in connection with the collapse of a pedestrian walkway at the Atlanta Botanical Garden that killed one worker and injured another 18.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration fined Hardin Construction Co., Williams Erection Co. and Southeast Access a total of $26,250.
The accident occured on Dec. 19 when part of the soaring walkway - as tall as 40 feet its highest - gave way as construction workers were pouring concrete onto it. The collapse killed 66-year-old worker Angel Chupin.
OSHA issues a serious citation when death or serious physical harm is likely to result from a hazard about which the employer knew or should have known. The companies have 15 business days to appeal.
