Augusta, Ga. -- The future for these pit bulls is uncertain.
Thirteen are in the custody of Animal Control until their owner is dealt with in court.
Animal Control workers say five more were euthanized because they were in obvious pain, from months of neglect.
The dogs were taken from a home on Old Savannah Road after workers were called out to break up a fight between 2 of the pit bulls.
Because they were injured so badly, they were euthanized.
Animal Control Director Diane Downs says, 3 more pit bulls were put down because they were underfed and diseased.
The owner is facing cruelty to animal charges.
Diane Downs, Animal Control Director: "We have no evidence at this time to suspect dogfighting. Why a person would own that many dogs, is anybody's guess."
Workers say most of the dogs did not have shelter and were not properly fed.
Downs: "That's part of the cruelty charge: no food, water, shelter, proper veterninary care."
We tried to talk to the dogs' owner but got no answer at the door.
Until the investigation is complete, Downs says the dogs are considered evidence in the case, and cannot be adopted.
The owner has not been charged, but could be charged with up to 18 counts of animal cruelty.
According to a county ordinance, it is illegal to own more than 7 pets.
