Augusta, GA—-Workers at Wild Wings Cafe are trying to clear things up with some of their customers. Many folks who ate here in October are seeing unfamiliar charges popping up on their credit card statements. The owner tells us someone using a laptop was able to steal some key information.
Dr. Jan Scholer, owner, Wild Wing Cafe: “What was happening when someone was swiping the card on the terminal they were intercepting the raw number at the terminal level and storing that. What they were doing then was they were taking these numbers and they were cloning the credit cars and selling them on the internet.“
Richmond & Columbia County investigators say after receiving calls from customers they noticed a pattern. After folks ate here charges were popping up from places like Atlanta, Canada and even London.
Dr. Jan Scholer, Owner: “We’ve always had this level of security at Wild Wing café the thing that we were not aware of is that people could get in through our Wi-Fi and setup a network.”
However the problem was fixed after a October 14th meeting with authorities.
Dr. Scholer: ‘“We’ve eliminated the Wi-Fi so no one can get in, no one can access the terminals that are in this restaurant. Our main computer that runs our POS point of service system…they would not be able to get credit card information because it’s 128 encryption, I mean, it’s the top of the line security.“
Scholer says customers have recently expressed concern but he says they have nothing to worry about.
Dr. Scholer: “We are in constant communication with the computer security people and they are monitoring our system and they know what’s going on.”
The owner says none of his employees have been charged with any criminal activity. If you’ve been a victim, contact your bank and dispute the charges.
