DILLON, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina man has been charged with cruelty to animals after authorities seized six horses and a pony from his home.

Jail officials said Thursday that 54-year-old Glenn Chestnut has been released on $800 bond. The Morning News of Florence reports that Chestnut was arrested Tuesday, nearly a week after authorities took the horses.

Deputies say the horses appeared underfed and were kept in cramped pens. A sheriff’s report states the ribs and hip bones of the horses were visible and there was very little food for them. Authorities say the animals were kept in pens soaked in water and horse manure and some were at the brink of death.

It was unclear if Chestnut has an attorney. There was no published phone number for him.
