ATLANTA (AP) - The driver of a school bus that struck and killed a 5-year-old boy Tuesday afternoon now faces second degree homicide by vehicle charges.

Atlanta Police Wednesday announced 39-year-old Sharon Denise Dale also is charged with failure to use due regard and school bus driver safety procedure.

Kindergarten student Everette Johnson had just gotten off the bus after classes at nearby Usher Elementary School.

Atlanta Police spokesman Officer James Polite said the boy was walking in front of the bus when the driver began to pull forward. He said the right front tire rolled over the child and that the boy tumbled underneath the bus and came to rest beneath the right rear tire.

Everette was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite where he later died.
