Army Corps Of Engineers Expects North Alabama-Georgia Drought Will Persist

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Hurricanes and tropical storms improved drought conditions in the Southeast, except for parts of north Alabama and Georgia where the Army Corps of Engineers anticipates continued below normal rainfall.

Corps spokesman Patrick Robbins in Mobile said Thursday that drought conditions persist in parts of the Alabama-Coosa-Tallapoosa and Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River basins.

He said the lower portions of the basins have benefitted the most from this year’s storm season. But the northern reservoirs of the basins did not receive the same benefits from these storms, and conditions haven’t improved at Georgia’s Lake Lanier and Carters Lake.

Robbins said flow gauges and other measurements show low flows in rivers and streams throughout the region and conservation measures will be required.
