Augusta, GA—A big way to save money is with your biggest expense…your home.

The home repair business doesn’t need fixing as people hold off on full-scale renovations and take things one small project at a time.

Your car’s problems are Jamie Pittman’s problems.

Jamie Pittman, Rhodes Imports: “Our business has increased dramatically.“

More people are coming to see him at Rhodes Imports, instead of getting a new ride.

Pittman: “Considering the average car payment is now $400 or 500 a month, to be conservative. Multiply that times 12 a year. You might do 1 repair a year of $1,200, but that’s still less than a car payment for a whole year.“

The less you spend, the more you have to keep rolling during the recession.

Antonio Glenn, Double O Sole, “Saving money could put more gas in the tank, like a tank and a half worth.“

Antonio Glenn and his father, William, run Double O Sole, on Washington Road. They make old shoes look like new. Even if you’re out of work, it’s a lot easier to pound the pavement after you pay them a visit.

William Glenn, Double O Sole: “The sole that i normally use on a shoe will last longer than the one that originally comes on it. So I would say, from my perspective, it would be most advantageous for them to have it repaired.“

Do you miss being pampered while your paycheck shrinks? You don’t have to.

Lisa Confer, Arbonne International: “We take care of everything from skin care, wellness, weight loss, everything from muscle aches to cosmetics.“

In-home cosmetics experts like the ones at Arbonne International are seeing business go up even as people hold back.

Vanamey Fleming, Arbonne International: “They’re pulling in. They’re pulling into their homes, but they don’t want to miss the experiences they had before, so they’re doing more in-home treatments, in-home spas, in-home facials, in-home cosmetics.“

The people at Computer Exchange are putting on a happy face.

Charles Kelly, Computer Exchange: “Our repair volume has doubled what it was last year.“

The charts show more of us are hanging on to our hard drives.

Kelly: “A computer that’s 3-5 years old still has good value and it just makes more sense, in a tough economy, to get it repaired.“

And one more merchant who’s making it these days…the man who helps us protect our possessions.

Kelvin Rhodes, Georgia Lock and Safe: “People are trying to secure what assets they have.“

Kelvin Rhodes Runs Georgia Lock and Safe service. He’s handled tough economic times before.

Rhodes: “We’re a family owned business. We’ve been in the security business for about 42 years. We’ve seen all different aspects, so we know a lot of the weak areas in a home and automobile, and that what we tailor towards securing.“

Security, savings, and stretching our dollars a little further, things all of these merchants are doing to help all of us hang on as we wait for the economy to turnaround.
