Amazon.Com Makes Its Case Against Google Book Deal

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Amazon.com is warning a federal judge that Google will be able to overcharge consumers and stifle competition if it wins court approval to add millions more titles to its already vast digital library.

The harsh critique of Google’s 10-month-old settlement with U.S. authors and publishers emerged in a 41-page brief that Amazon filed this week.

Amazon, the owner of the Internet’s largest book store, is joining a growing chorus of critics trying to persuade U.S. District Judge Denny Chin to block Google’s digital book settlement from taking effect.

At least two other Google rivals, Microsoft and Yahoo, are also expected to express their opposition. Today’s the deadline for most filings in the case.
