BALTIMORE (AP) - Michael Phelps’ coach says he is sure the swimmer will learn from his latest controversy, and is glad to have him back in training.
Coach Bob Bowman issued the statement Sunday after a British tabloid published a photograph showing the Olympic gold medalist inhaling from a marijuana pipe in November at the University of South Carolina, in Columbia. The coach did not respond to phone and e-mail messages and issued the short statement through Phelps’ agent.
The statement says Phelps “regrets his behavior, and I’m sure he’ll learn from this experience. I’m glad to have him back in training.“
The U.S. Olympic Committee says it is disappointed in Phelps’ the behavior.
The USOC recently named Phelps, who won eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, the group’s sportsman of the year.
