ORANGE PARK, Fla. (AP) - Mourners in Florida have released hundreds of purple balloons to end the funeral of a slain 7-year-old who vanished last week as she was walking home from school.
Somer Thompson’s body was found two days later in a south Georgia landfill.
Pastor David Tarkington at First Baptist Church of Orange Park says Somer was a friendly little girl whom he called “a community hugger.“
Purple was her favorite color, and her casket was decorated with purple flowers Tuesday.
After the funeral, a motorcade took her body to Jacksonville Memory Gardens for private graveside services for family and friends.
Police say they have received about 1,500 leads in the case but they have not named a suspect or person of interest.
