DETROIT (AP) - A judge has sentenced former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to 120 days in jail, nine months after a newspaper story about text messages ignited a scandal at City Hall.

Wayne County Circuit Judge David Groner ordered the sentence Tuesday afternoon and noted Kilpatrick would not be given an opportunity for early release.

The Democratic ex-mayor pleaded guilty last month to obstruction of justice, admitting he lied about an affair with his chief of staff while testifying in a civil lawsuit in 2007. He also pleaded no contest to assaulting a sheriff’s detective.

The hearing was moved to a larger courtroom Tuesday to accommodate the news media and spectators.

The 38-year-old Kilpatrick left office Sept. 18 after nearly seven years as mayor.
