Winter Springs, FL—In the wee hours of Friday morning, John Tabbut made a desperate call to 911.
John Tabbut’s voice: “I thought I had an intruder in the house, and I shot the intruder, but the intruder’s my wife.“
She was actually his fiancee, 62-year old Nancy Dinsmore, seen in photos on Facebook.
Tabbut: “We were supposed to get married this Saturday. Oh God.“
Startled by a noise just before 3:00 a.m., Tabutt fired a single shot with his .38 caliber revolver at a moving figure in the hallway.
Tabbut: “Oh my God.“
But instead of shooting a stranger, his fiancee was shot in the chest…
911 operator: “Is she conscious right now, yes or no?“
Tabbut: “Honest to God, she looks dead. No she’s breathing, she’s breathing, hang in there, honey, hang in there.“
The ambulance arrived within minutes, but it was too late.
911 operator: “We have units on the scene…she doesn’t seem to be breathing. She does or does not? Does not.“
The Winter Springs Police Department believes Tabbut’s grief was genuine:
Chief Kevin Brunelle, Winter Springs Police Department: “Intitial investigation and site at the scene does not indicate any type of foul play.“
In a telephone interview, Dinsmore’s daughter, Arlene said, “she was a good mother, she was a good person.“
Jeremy Hubbard, reporting: “Nancy Dinsmore’s memorial services will be held this week, in Maine, where she’ll be burried next to her first husband of 35 years.“
