Augusta, GA—Augusta’s next splost is a done deal, but at what cost?
Voters overwhelmingly approved extending the one-cent sales tax, with more than 70 percent of the vote, but turnout was terrible…less than 10,000 voters took part.
It cost more than $83,000 to hold this referendum, so on a per-vote basis, this was an expensive election.
Lynn Bailey, Executive Director, Richmond County Board of Elections: “Our estimates, now, for cost per vote is about $8.60 for the election we had yesterday. It’s not the most expensive election we’ve ever done…per vote, you know it’s up there, but anytime you have these special standalone elections, and often times in runoffs, you’re going to see these big numbers…the cost per vote being very high.“
Bailey points out one reason the turnout percentage was so low, Tuesday, is because the number of registere voters in Augusta is so high. Thanks to huge voter drives before the presidential race, Augusta now has nearly 112,000 voters on the roll.
