Fired Up Or Fatigued Voters Head To The Polls…One Last Time

Advance voting ends for next Tuesday’s runoff, in Georgia. A big U.S. Senate race is on the ballot, and that’s bring out thousands of voters, but not the numbers we saw, four weeks ago. WJBF News Channel 6’s George Eskola has the story.

Augusta, GA—90-year-old Susan Moore wouldn’t miss it, taking advantage of the last day of advance voting to cast her runoff ballot.

“I tried to do my duty, in spite of being blind and decrepit and all that,” she said with a laugh.

Turnout has been steady for the early voting, somewhat surprising for a runoff.

“With this being a U.S. Senate race, I do think it’s a big race, and with the turnout we had a few weeks ago, I think a lot of people want to get out and make their vote count,” said Blaine Lamar, a poll worker at the Warren Road Advance voting site.

Augusta elections officials predict a 15 to 20 percent turnout for the runoff, a far cry from last month, where nearly 75 percent of Augusta’s registered voters made it to the polls.

“In Georgia this is our fifth election this year and for a lot of voters voter fatigue sets in and you can’t quite get up for the run off,“ says Elections Director, Lynn Bailey.

Richard Edwards was playing with his daughter at Warren Road Park, right next to where advance voting was going on. He voted in November, and though he could have easily joined the voters at Warren Road, he’s not interested, this time around. “No plans, I am a non-voter,” he said.

But thousands have already cast ballots in the runoff, and will be returning to the polls; Tuesday. It is the thing to do, they say.

“I think every vote counts, so I’m voting,” said Barney Glover.
