SC Teacher Of The Year To Be Named Friday Night
One South Carolina teacher among roughly 50,000 will soon become the new statewide teacher of the year. State schools chief Jim Rex will make the surprise announcement during a ceremony Friday night at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. The corporate-funded event will also honor district winners.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - One South Carolina teacher among roughly 50,000 will soon become the new statewide teacher of the year.
State schools chief Jim Rex will make the surprise announcement during a ceremony Friday night at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. The corporate-funded event will also honor district winners.
The five statewide finalists are Amanda McKee of Florence 5; Derenda Marshall of Georgetown County; Deborah Moore of Newberry County; Dywanna Smith of Richland 1; and Bryan Coburn of York 3.
The 2009-10 winner will represent South Carolina in the National Teacher of the Year program. Her prizes will include $25,000, a laptop computer and a BMW to drive for a year.
The other four finalists will receive $10,000 each. Local district teachers of the year receive $1,000 each.
