COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Seventy-two South Carolina high school seniors are graduating with 12 years of perfect attendance, including one who received a car for his perseverance.
The students represent less than 0.2 percent of the more than 40,000 seniors graduating this spring.
State Education Superintendent Jim Rex says attending 2,160 consecutive school days without a single absence is an amazing achievement. All 72 students will receive a letter of congratulations from his office.
The record meant a new car for a Sumter student. Lakewood High School senior Dwayne Geddings won a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt in the “Drive for Perfection” contest. Chevrolet sponsored the contest among 58 schools in 10 counties in central South Carolina.
The 72 students include a set of twins graduating from Union High School.
